I started ‘salem’s Lot which is a very long book and watched more TV shows as opposed to movies this month, but it’s still worth reviewing!
Books
Thanks to Simon and Schuster Canada for sending me this in exchange for an honest review! This book was well-written, well-researched, and has been getting stellar reviews but I just couldn’t get into it. I appreciate it for what it is though!
Penance by Kanae Minato - 4/5
Not the horror novel I was expecting but absolutely fantastic nonetheless. I loved that it was a psychological horror and I loved how the mystery slowly pieced itself together. I hope to read more of Minato’s work!
I loved the writing in this and think Galway did a great job with getting the vibe of the time period. The story could have been tighter in a few places, but it was a great read!
Movies
Abigail dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (2024) - 2.5/5
I don’t know if I would have enjoyed this movie more had I not known the twist, but it honestly wasn’t very good. Some funny lines and Dan Stevens is funny, but otherwise a disappointment.
Child Star dir. Demi Lovato and Nicola B. Marsh (2024) - 3/5
Loses some stars for working with a scab and Scooter Braun and shamelessly promoting a new song.
Challengers dir. Luca Guadagnino (2004) - 4/5
It’s so strange to see people only learning who Mike Faist is now. This was a lot of fun though, but the music at times just came out of nowhere.
TV Shows
No YOU cried at the end of Six Feet Under! Honestly a fantastic show, truly the best season finale I’ve ever watched. Well worth the hype!
Probably my favourite ARC so far! I love Vivi and I definitely feel the tone shifting in the show as more serious topics are coming forward. I also can’t wait to learn more about Nico Robin!
I tried watching this before the pandemic and got very overwhelmed because it was from the library and it was overdue. I’m watching it now with my sister and absolutely loving it. It’s weird and SO MUCH happened in the finale, I’m very curious about the second season (even though I maybe sort of spoiled it for myself about who killed Laura Palmer…).
