Coming in a week late, but that doesn’t mean I can’t post my round-up!
Books
The Dry Season: A Memoir of Pleasure in a Year Without Sex by Melissa Febos - 3/5
Febos is a former serial dater who decides to be celibate for a year to figure out what it is she’s been looking for in her relationships. It’s well-written, but I think this book will mean more to people who have been in Febos situation than those who haven’t.
Considering how hyped this book is, I was surprised by how disappointed I was by this book. There’s no doubt it’s well researched, but the book felt like I wasn’t supposed to be aware of it’s message until the end, even though the story is fairly predictable.
Fuse by Hollay Ghadery - 4/5
Thank you to River Street Writing for sending me this in exchange for an honest review! Ghadery’s memoir is an honest intimate look at her struggles with OCD, self-image, disordered eating, and trying to understand it all as a biracial woman. The book feels like she is talking to her reader and I loved the openness of the writing.
The Tea Dragon Society by K. O’Neill - 4/5
Very cute, and I loved the illustrations, but I was surprised by how short and simple it was.
She’s A Lamb! by Meredith Hambrock - 4.5/5
I adored this! It’s hard being in Jessamyn’s head, but Hambrock manages to make us empathize with her despite it all. One of my favourites for the year!
All This Can Be True by Jen Michalski - 3.5/5
Thank you to The Next Best Book Club for sending me this in exchange for an honest review! A very tender book, I like how Michalski writes grief and manages to write complicated characters that readers still root for. The two time jumps at the end were a bit jarring though.
Movies
Godzilla Minus One dir. Takashi Yamazaki (2023) 4/5
I was very excited to watch what is apparently the best Godzilla movie and this didn’t disappoint. Not that I can compare it to any other Godzilla movies (yet…), but I really enjoyed the characters and plot of this one.
I have not been this stressed out over a fictional cat since I read the Warriors series. I loved this!
TV Shows
I watched a lot of One Piece because it is my mission to catch up to the One Piece baby on TikTok, and according to my friend who is an expert on the series I’m very close. I never would have predicted loving an anime so much, but here we are!
